Aita...

I really miss  Aita...if she were alive today..things would have been so different. Every evening, I  feel that she would walk in through the door for her regular evening outing. Despite her age and frail health,  she would be impeccably dressed in a starched cotton sari with  her hair tied back neatly in a bun. A generous dash of perfume  would invariably signal her presence from a distance.

She was an extremely active lady. Everyday, she would read the newspaper... from the masthead to the classifieds. She embroidered beautiful pieces of clothing, bags and recycled material that we would most likely discard, transforming them into items of utility and display. She loved cooking and  would often cook up elaborate dishes for her visiting grandchildren. I remember one such visit. It was 5 or 6 years ago...or maybe more, and my cousin was visiting Gh from down south. So she decided to invite just the two of us..my cousin and I..for dinner. The table was draped in a beautiful handstitched table cloth. Fine pieces of bone china adorned the table and the food that was laid out, was a gourmet's delight.  There was  a dish of baked vegetables and egg, macaroni and cheese, a fish pie, noodles cooked chinese style and for dessert, there were pancakes filled with pineapple jelly. She didn't have to do any of these things...but she was Aita and she knew how to make a guest feel special, even if it were her young grandchildren!!

Its a pity that K... can  only hear stories about her. I wish he had had a chance to actually meet his Aitama in person...that would have been an absolute delight!
